West of South-West (WSW) – The Vastu Zone for Education and Savings

The zone is the West-South-West direction of knowledge (study). In the shastra, this is the area governing vidya abhyaas; vidya means knowledge, and abhyaas means practice. So, practising what is observed, practising skilfully and continuity of effort will ensure gain of knowledge.

The allied zone is that of gains and a good place for dining. This is analogous to persevering skilfully, imbibing knowledge at regular intervals, and then practising it skillfully. So, knowledge will be gained.

Therefore, the West-South-West zone grants capability for vidya abhyas, as also the power, energy and capacity for vidya abhyas, as also the power, energy and capacity for retention of that knowledge. Ideally, the children’s room should be located here.

In most of the houses, I have designed so far, this zone between the South-West and West has been allocated for the children’s room.

The younger generation happens to be most favoured by the pitra. By sleeping in this zone, children become more skilled and gain more knowledge which helps them lead successful lives.

It is important that children should study well, train themselves and acquire skills and learning and grow property. Childhood is as much a time for acquiring knowledge, as for fun and frolic.

The influence of anything placed in the West-South-West zone can be seen easily - if a television set is kept here, it will definitely distract the child from his studies. He will think of cartoons when he should be studying (vidya ashyayan), it reminds him of cartoons.

This is so because whenever vidya abhyas (studies) is going on, the child’s Manomaya Kosha immediately connects with the building’s Manomaya Kosha. Whatever has been placed there, the symbolic message is perceived by his Manomaya Kosha, and only those things appear in the mind.

So, in the child’s mind, the meaning of studies becomes - being associated with television. This is why, in reality, he is not able to focus on studies. The mind will focus on or attend to whatever is placed in the zone of studies.

Ready, one of our trainers, a successful MahaVastu consultant, carried out research in houses on ‘child education’. She found that children are not able to memories, if a washing machine is placed there in the West-South-West zone.

The activity in a washing machine is the activity of manthan, or an activity even of disposal, but not the activity of vidya abhyas (practice of knowledge or studies). With a washing machine there, the child may study as hard as he can, but will always feel drained out. In the examination - the mind is a blank.

If there is an activity of fire in this  zone, then aggression starts building up. Just tell a child ‘why are you not studying?” and see the result. He will grumble and get annoyed. Fire limits the imbibing of knowledge (vidya grahan).

So, manifestations vis-a-vis any zone in real life are governed exactly by the kind of activity (even the symbolism of activity) going on in it.

Often, while designing houses, I create a space for keeping (saving) money in this particular zone. This is in order to improve their awareness and knowledge about what they wish to save or collect, in life. The West- South-West area also acts as guide to sensible expenditure.

I have also used the West-South-West zone as a place for the children’s study table. The children’s library is well-placed here, and if this is not possible, then the painting of a library may be hung here so that an environment conducive to studies is created.

The child’s mind will receive a clear and positive message from the mind of the space (house) and work accordingly. To him, this information appears to be coming from the universal mind, and is thus, right. So, all these points must be kept in mind with respect to the zone of vidya abhyas.
